Utilizăm ideea de „fierbinte” și „rece” în multe expresii, pentru a ne referi la vreme, la oameni și la relații. Iată câteva dintre cele mai comune expresii și fraze idiomatice.

Weather and temperature

ice cold / freezing cold / stone cold = foarte rece: „This tea is stone cold!”

a cold snap / a cold spell = vreme rece: „We’re in for a cold snap this weekend.”

People

cold-hearted = a nu fi o persoană caldă: „She is so cold-hearted, who ignoring her boyfriend like that!”

cold-blooded killer / kill someone in cold blood = have no mercy for your victim: „He was killed in cold blood.”

cold facts = fapte clare: „Just give me the cold facts!”

leave someone cold = a nu fi interesat de ceva / cineva: „Mi-e teamă că privitul la fotbal la televizor mă lasă rece.”

a arunca apă rece pe ceva = a distruge entuziasmul altora în legătură cu ceva: „Credeam că avem niște idei foarte bune, dar apoi ea a aruncat apă rece pe ele.”

Relații

a lăsa pe cineva în frig = a nu include pe cineva: „În timp ce ceilalți jucau cărți, ea a fost lăsată pe dinafară.”

să vină de la rece = să fie acceptată într-un grup: „He’s finally come in from the cold.”

give someone the cold shoulder = a ignora pe cineva: „After the party,he was given the cold shoulder.”

Cold War = stare de neprietenie între SUA și URSS după cel de-al doilea război mondial: „We’re studying the Cold War in history”.

cold comfort = o mică veste bună care nu schimbă prea mult o situație proastă: „Sales reductions of 50% are cold comfort if you have no money to go shopping!”

get / catch a cold = a se îmbolnăvi de răceală: „I caught a cold last week.”

Iată câteva expresii uzuale care folosesc „hot”:

to be hot = foarte popular / la modă: „Iceland is a very hot weekend destination at the moment.”

a hot favourite = cineva / ceva cu cele mai mari șanse de a câștiga: „Red Rum a fost întotdeauna favoritul fierbinte pentru a câștiga Grand National.”

un sfat fierbinte = sugestie importantă sau utilă: „He gave me a hot tip for my interview.”

a hot topic = o problemă care este importantă: „Climate change is a hot topic at the moment.”

hot off the press = poveste foarte nouă: „This gossip is hot off the press.”
