Both si usa per parlare di due persone o cose.

Both cats and dogs are pet animals.

Prima di un sostantivo con un determinatore (the, my, this etc.), both e both of sono entrambi possibili.

Both of my parents are teachers. OR Entrambi i miei genitori sono insegnanti.
Puoi prendere entrambe le camicie. OR Puoi prendere entrambe le camicie.
Entrambe queste risposte sono corrette. OR Entrambe queste risposte sono corrette.

Nota che il è spesso lasciato cadere dopo entrambi.

Ha mangiato entrambe le braciole. O Ha mangiato entrambe le costolette. OR She has eaten both of the chops.

Prima dei pronomi personali si usa both of.

Both of them have agreed to come. (NON Entrambi hanno accettato di venire.)
Ha invitato entrambi. (NOT She has invited both you.)

Nota che both of è seguito dalle forme oggetto del pronome (us, them, you etc.).

The non usato prima di both

Non mettiamo the prima di both.

Both the boys were given prizes. (NOT The both boys were given prizes.)

Strutture negative

Nelle strutture negative si usa neither, non both not.

Nessuno dei due venne. (NON entrambi non sono venuti.)

Entrambi con i verbi

Nota la struttura speciale in cui entrambi va con il verbo.

Possono nuotare entrambi. (= Entrambi sanno nuotare.)
Sono venuti entrambi. (= Entrambi sono venuti.)
A entrambi è piaciuto il film. (= A entrambi è piaciuto il film.)

Nota che in questa struttura le parole della stessa parte del discorso seguono both e and.

She is both beautiful and intelligent. (Qui entrambi e e sono seguiti da aggettivi.)
